"There are like 10 of us in our family, and we had everything. We had compassion and love and we appreciated it all. We never went without. Well, I have a friend who is a foster parent, and my friend said, 'You would make a good foster mom.' I said, 'Me?' and she said, 'Why not you? I'm a foster mom. Just try it.' So I went into it."
- Nancy, single foster mom
Attending an orientation session is your next step, and they are mandatory for all prospective foster parents. Orientations usually last 2 – 3 hours and are held on various weekdays and evenings. Some counties also hold orientation sessions on Saturdays.
Orientation schedules and contact phone numbers are posted for the following California counties:
Alameda County
Contra Costa County
Kern County
Mariposa County
San Mateo County
Yolo County
Remember, you must attend an orientation in the county where you live. If you don't live in one of the above counties, use your phone book or the Internet to look up your county's Social Services (or Child Welfare) Department and ask for an orientation schedule.
